Stained Glass

Chantal Olthoff, Netherlands (Atelier Pastelchan)

The Design

My inspiration for this contest was stained glass for its simple storytelling looks. I also wanted to combine my new corsetting techniques with my history of sewing Lolita fashion through using boning and lacing together with a big poofy skirt and ruffles.

The Construction

The dress consists of a simple black cotton base with reinforced stretch lamé fabric panels in the skirt and the bodice. I used boning to give the bodice shape, added foam padding to the bust cups and added metal eyelets to the front. The back has looped braid to give the bodice shape, and there's a zipper in the side. The bodice edges are finished with bias tape and the skirt consists of three layers and is supported by various petticoats.

What was it like to compete this year? What would you say to someone who is on the fence about entering next year?

This was my first time - I discovered the contest this year. I always like to challenge myself, so this was a great opportunity to show off my skills (and get my name out there a bit!) It's definitely worth a try!

This is so cool! The colours you chose are wonderful, and you can tell exactly where you drew your inspiration from.
Such a fun design! The fluffy skirt lover in me keeps imaging what that looks like when you twirl!
I love the combination of gothic Lolita style with the gothic window! Really clear design and inspiration too, with the blue and black grids and curves.
Great colour combination and silhouette, Chantal! I think you captured the spirit of your inspiration really well. :)
Great colours, and I love the silhouette of the skirt.

Well done, I love the stylistic nod to the Lolita community
I love that clever little interpretation of the window lattice as lacing! What an adorable little frock--that pop of blue is so vibrant and lovely!
It definitively shows that you have experience in the Lolita fashion. I like this blue petals on the skirt, they really pop and the bias is done beautifully. Your inspiration really shows through! Well done!
This is really pretty! I definitely see the stained glass inspiration, and at the same time, it reminds me of a flower!
I like how you have interpreted the windows into the petals on the skirt. It looks a bit like a butterfly as well and would have looked great in last years competition too.
Wonderful colors! The inspiration is so well carried over into your design! Beautiful!!
Lovely colours and translation of your subject in the design, beautiful.

Congratulations on your first entry! Such a wonderful inspiration image, and a creative interpretation of it.
