Model: Lucia Corsetti Photographer: L'Atelier de LaFleur
With Weeping Willow, I wanted to create a corset full of depth and movement. Inspired by the willows as they transition from spring into summer and airy evenings at twilight; a blending of the cool and warm light and colours that make that time so magical. It continues an ongoing body of work based around the anatomy of trees.
The focus of this design are the hundreds of hand-cut sheer leaves of different tonal aquas, greens, and a touch of gold iridescence individually stitched onto hand-painted and beaded silk thread. In the spirit of renewal, many of the leaves were cut from organzas I have stashed for ten to fifteen years and I was particularly interested in using non-toxic dyeing methods for the silk thread, which is done with gel food colourings. The silk base is a changeant silk dupioni. Clusters of crystal, pearls, and natural stones in a variety of sizes and colours are mounted on gold wires and hand-placed for just enough sparkle to enhance without overwhelming. The asymmetrical hems suggest the gentle leaning silhouette that makes willow trees so beautiful. Asymmetry is something that challenges me as a designer who usually gravitates towards symmetrical designs. Since trees are not symmetrical, I wanted to practice not only asymmetrical embellishments, but hemlines as well. Also on the theme of renewal, I’ve wanted to push myself outside of the patterning I’ve become comfortable with and try some new things, particularly by giving up a curvy side seam in favour of a side panel. One of the things I've really tried to do with this piece is to incorporate a kinetic element. Trees have life and movement and I think that's part of why they're so lovely to look at. I intentionally avoided over-sewing the leaves so that they have a life when a breeze moves them.
Coutil, dupioni silk, organza of different textures and colours, hand-painted silk thread, Swarovski glass pearls and crystal beads, Japanese glass seed beads, quartz faceted stones.
Thank you, Andrea! As I wrote my entry, I completely forgot to talk about the skirt and I appreciate its notice. :)
This is so beautiful. It's wonderfully evocative of the willow and the colours are perfect.
Thank you so much, I'm so glad the idea was conveyed! I agonized over the colours for a time and I'm glad it was time well spent. ;)
I love the color. The entire piece has a very calming effect, a serene work of art. It's just beautiful.
Thank you very much! It's such a treat for me to think it has a calming effect. Though the completion became hurried toward the end, I think I was soothed at times by the slow laboriousness of it.
I love everything about this. the colour, the movement, the beautiful fit and finish! Stunning. The model shot is spectacular too :)
Thank you so much, Jalea! I really appreciate your comment on the modelled shot, another bit of new territory for me. ;)
Just lovely! From your subtle use of color to the movement to the sparkle of jewels, the total effect is stunning. You captured the spirit of the willow and distilled it to a delightful essence.

This is *unbelievably* magical! The colors are divine, and I’m so glad you included that video clip—the movement of those sheer leaves is the actual epitome of all magical things!
Thank you so much, Bernadette! The colours bamboozled me for a time, so I'm glad it all came together favourably. I'm a little bit sheepish that the only video I had prepared was this little clip that now our mentor on all things video has seen it. :p I do believe I clocked some sewing time watching your videos as I worked on this, so thank you for the company!
This ensemble is a faerietale come to life. Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you see it that way!
This is positively ethereal, I adore how "calm" it is and still elegant and embellished. This is a piece of art and it fits Lucy so well both in its nature and its physical fitting

The movement in this piece is absolutely delightful - it really gives the rigid corset life - I love that you experimented with non-toxic dyes too and moved out of your comfort zone with the patterning :)
