The Design

My entry represents the birth of spring after the winter. It shows spring flowers appearing on a brown background, representing the dull colours of winter and has highlights of green and yellow, symbolising spring.

The Construction

The main fabrics used were taken from existing garments, which were deconstructed and used to cut out the pattern pieces. This project had a lot of new experiences for me, including using quilting for the first time and having to struggle with the bulk all the layers created! I adapted my pattern from one that I had used in a previous project, so I was aware of the fit, and that meant I didn't have to start from scratch.

Materials Used

Poly cotton (taken from shirt and trousers)
Wool (taken from blanket)
Polyester
Polyester thread
Beads (glass/plastic)
Plastic boning
Polyester ribbon

I love the symbolism of the colours, and how you combined them to make something so very beautiful!

It's lovely! I really like the quilted figures, and how they add texture.

I love your idea of having flowers popping through the ground! That has always been one of my parents' favorite things during spring, to see plants coming back to blah Ohio!

I love that you were able to use existing garments as a fabric source, and the detail of the quilted flowers is beautiful.

Awh this is so sweet! Love the quilting too- I can only imagine how tricky it must have been to deal with the bulk

I love your choice to add that little spark of beading at the seams; it really adds so much magic to the design!

This is magical and speaks to me! I love the subtlness of the quilted flowers on the earth tone fabric. The twinkle of beading at the seams makes me think of spring frosts and tiny patches of glittering snow, melting in the dripping, sunny days while crocus and daffodils burst from the soil in riotous color!

The quilting adds a really unusual and exciting texture to that front panel - I love the little twinkle of the bead details on the seams too

I like the color palette that you chose. Good job on your first experience with quilting, by the way. I think it is very pretty with the small touches of beading embellishment you've done.

I love how you have used old materials to make something new, like the composting of winter coming into the newness of spring. The shape of this is quite interesting and delicious. The embroidery is this subtle touch of beauty and hope. What a gorgeous piece!

Nice interpretation of the theme. I love the quilting details!

I created a quilted corset last year so feel you pain! Really love what you have made - the colours are beautiful and the 'embossed' feel of your little design features are quirky and fun.

such a sweet design, and a really wonderful idea of embedding the patterns in it, instead of adding more bulk by stictching something on!

Those quilted details are so delicate. They remind me of chakras.
