The Design

I had a lot grander ideas for this year's entry, but time and life got the better of me. However, I decided to channel the renewal theme into an upcycling element and challenge myself to make something from what I had. I bought nothing new for this design: the striped fabric was gifted to me a while ago and everything has been sitting in my stash for a long time. I decided to add the lace to break up the stripes and give it a softer look. The name comes from the fabric reminding me of American nurse's uniforms which were fondly called 'Candy Stripes'.

The Construction

The basis of the corset is a simple underbust pattern that I have drafted myself and use often. I used a herringbone tape to create the boning channels externally but on the inside of the corset. I was originally going to drape the lace as one piece over the corset but in the end decided to use individual motifs. It isn't as elaborate as I would have hoped and there are a few perfectionist details that are annoying me, but the shaping is beautiful and I love the colours.

Materials Used

White coutil, pink and white poly cotton, silver lace, black herringbone twill tape, spiral and flat steel boning, silver eyelets, white satin ribbon.

Yes is so soft and elegant in its almost chanel-like simplicity. I adore it, and I love the story of the name of makes me smile

I can so relate to time getting the better of you, BUT, this is amazing nevertheless! I absolutely love the charm of this. Candy stripes are kind of a favorite of mine, and the design is just beautiful!

Oooh, I love how the inside is just as striking and appropriately candy-stripey as the outside!

Cute! This is very cute and really does look like a pretty but sensible and very wearable garment. The sort of thing someone would wear under their normal everyday clothes to make themselves feel a little prettier.

Before I even read the title or your description, I instantly thought of the Candy Stripers! I am sorry that this wasn't what you had intended, and that life happened, but I love this piece. smile

This is soft, elegant, and so joyous! I really enjoy how the inside and outside are so beautiful and that you only used what you had on hand. There is something quietly beautiful about this piece. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I am always struggle to use what I have, rather than buy new for each project. Great work on upcycling, and creating something soft and beautiful, with vintage vibes.

Such a lovely little piece!
It doesn't always have to be huge robes - there can be just as much beauty and great details in something small.
Well done for participating anyways, despite life and time challenges!
