To answer your question, two darts were sewn into each hip piece on the original corset (so four hip darts in total). In the construction of the final corset I found I only needed one dart on each hip, but it was definitely necessary to get a smooth shape over the hip. If the pattern was cut shorter over the hip (above end point of dart) it could be eliminated.
